Getting preapproved for a mortgage will save time and expense on your home search.  A preapproval letter can also improve your negotiating position when making an offer and is sometimes required by the seller.

Use this calculator to estimate the amount of money that a lender may be willing to loan you.  You will still need to meet with a mortgage agent to be approved for a loan, but this is a good starting point.
